Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship

All Volcano Vista High School students and parents have a responsibility to show respect and consideration for their opponents, coaches, and officials as well as to demonstrate enthusiastic support of the Hawks.

Good sportsmanship requires students to observe the following:

1. Booing or harassing the opposing team or officials represents poor sportsmanship

2. Students should respect all private and public property

3. Unnecessary litter, such as confetti, creates additional work for stadium and gymnasium maintenance people and does little to show respect for the athletic teams.

4.  Due to safety concerns, students may not rush the gym floor, stadium, field or team.

NMAA: The NMAA defines sportsmanship as, “the act of treating others in a respectful manner; taking personal accountability for ones actions and responding with integrity while engaged in competition.” It is rooted in three core values: Respect, Integrity and Responsibility.

RESPECT: Treat the traditions of the game and opponents with respect. Refrain from engaging in or tolerating disrespectful conduct including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent “trash-talking,” taunting, and unseemly celebrations. Win with grace and lose with dignity.

INTEGRITY: Honor the rules of the game and refrain from gamesmanship. Adhere to high standards of fair play. Focus on education and character development goals. Refrain from engaging in or tolerating dishonesty, cheating or dishonorable conduct.

RESPONSIBILITY: Be a positive role model on and off the field. Take accountability for your actions. Accept your mistakes. Possess self-control and learn from adversity. Further the mental, social and moral development of athletes and teach life skills that enhance personal success and social responsibility.
