Attention Hawks.  A Student Chapter of EDUCATORS RISING is coming to Volcano Vista.  Educators Rising is a student organization dedicated to developing aspiring teachers by providing members with hands-on teaching and learning experiences and support to cultivate and sustain interest in the profession.  There will be an informational meeting this Wednesday @ lunch in E111 for ALL students interested in the joining the Volcano Vista Chapter of Educators Rising.

ELECTIONS: We will be having the Mayoral Elections on our campus on Tuesday, Oct 3rd in The Black Box from 7am -7pm. School will be in session, and we will have the North Lot open for any voters coming to our campus on this day.  If you see any people coming to vote, please be courteous and direct them to the Black Box.

Today is FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 1, 2017

Please rise for the pledge

 

HURRICANE HARVEY has devastated the Houston area. Senate is selling paper Hawks for $1.00 If you would like to purchase a Hawk or if any group would like to join our efforts and sell the Hawks please stop by the activities office.  We will also donate $1.00 of every dance ticket to victims of the devastation. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross.

 

Carnival:

Attention Students:  Would you like to see a teacher dropped in a large container of water?  If you do, come to the Carnival on Tuesday after school from 4:30-6:00 p.m.  Cost is $1 per throw.  If you bring an item of clothing, blankets, or toiletries to donate to the victims of Hurricane Harvey, we will let you have one throw for free.  Some of the teachers who volunteered to be in the Dunk booth are: Ms. Shrader, Senor Cuevas, Mr. Gustafson, Mrs. Allen, Ms. Rossi, and Mrs. Garcia.  Hope to see you all there!"

ATHLETICS: 

Any girls interested in playing high school tennis for the Hawks should plan on attending our first preseason practice Friday, Sept. 1 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Sierra Vista courts. These hitting sessions will continue every Friday in the Fall and will help you get ready for the spring season. Please see Coach Roybal or Coach Kappus for more information about tennis.

 

There is a SOFTBALL information meeting during lunch on Tuesday, September 5th.  If you are interested in trying out for the lady’s softball team, please attend this meeting

CLASS OF 2019: Juniors there will be a class meeting in Mr. Finn’s room during lunch on Friday. All juniors are invited to attend.

 

SENIORS: ALL seniors that signed up for homecoming court please meet in the lecture hall at lunch today to get you picture taken for the ballot. Seniors will vote for court tomorrow during their class meeting 3rd period.

 

If you are interested in being the TALENT at the coronation, please stop by the activities office to sign up.

 

Any junior or senior interested in participating in the annual POWDERPUFF FOOTBALL game please stop by the activities office and fill out a permission slip. All permission slips are due on Monday, August 21 at the meeting in the lecture hall at lunch.

July 26     9-noon     Early ID's

ALL students attending VVHS during the 2017-18 school year will need to have their ID picture taken. Students will receive their ID on the 26th and can bypass this station at registration. Students are expected to be in dress code. If they are not in dress code we will provide them with a VVHS t-shirt to wear for the photo.

 

If you cannot attend on this date you may take your ID pic at registration.

 

They may also pick up their locker assignment. There is a rental fee of $2.00 for the locker.

Pre-registration session is scheduled for the following date

 

  • July 26th  @ 8:00 a.m.

 

The following are the enrollment and pre-registration procedures for students who live in the VVHS attendance boundaries and will attend VVHS for the 2017– 2018 school year, but who do NOT currently attend VVHS, LBJ Middle School or Tony Hillerman Middle School:

 

1.  Call VVHS at 890-0343 ex 37052 or ex 37202 to reserve a seat in one of the above enrollment/pre-registration sessions.

 

2.  Information to Bring to VVHS Data Processor (Louanne Rauen) in room F117 before the Scheduled Pre-Registration Session:  

            A. Birth Certificate – Required if new to APS

            B. Immunization Record, up-to-date, which must include TDAP within the last 5 years

            C. Proof of Address – student and parent/legal guardian must live in VVHS attendance

                 boundaries (visit www.aps.edu  to verify assigned school for residence address):

  1. Current PNM or Gas Utility Bill with parent/legal guardian name and physical

street address on it (water, cable, phone bills, etc. do not apply); OR

                        2. Current Rental Agreement (with parent/legal guardian name, student name and

                            physical street address on it); OR

                        3. Current Purchase Agreement (with parent/legal guardian name and physical

                            street address on it)

            D. Transcript, report card – Current unofficial transcripts and most recent report card.

            E. Copies of IEP, special program/course placement, etc, if applicable (i.e., special

                education, gifted, ESL services)

 

3.  BEFORE your scheduled pre-registration session—please bring in all items listed in #2 then you will be given a registration packet to complete and leave with the Data Processor.

 

4.  When all documentation is received, you will be given a Course Request Card to take home and complete. Get signatures from current Math & English teachers for course recommendations on the Course Request Card.

 

 

5.  If you need further assistance or have questions concerning the Course Request Card there will be counselors available to assist you at the scheduled Pre-Registration Session. In-depth course evaluation will require a separate, scheduled meeting at a later date/time

ATTENTION ALL STAFF AND STUDENTS, OUR FINAL SOAR CARD drawing will be Tuesday, May 16.  Make sure you get your SOAR cards dropped in any drop box on campus – academy offices and library.  Grand prize winner will win a lap-top and the other two winners will win a tablet.  So get those cards in this week.

VVHS JROTC competed at Nationals this past weekend in Colorado Springs, Co. They brought home 5 trophies, two 2nd place and three 3rd place. Congratulations JROTC!

 

eCademy final exams for graduating seniors are this week. If you are graduating this May, you need to take the final exams for your online classes either on May 3rd or May 4th at eCademy’s main campus between 3pm and 6pm. No students will be allowed to start a final exam after 5pm, so arrive early. Make sure you also bring a picture ID. If you have further questions, come by the eCademy lab classroom in A-208.

 

YEARBOOKS will be distributed to seniors at the senior picnic on Tuesday. Underclassmen may pick up their books at the activities office on Wednesday at lunch. Books will be on sale at this time for $75.00.

 

SENIORS, if you still have a library book, please return it by Friday, May 5th. Come see Ms. Holmes if you need more time. Library books from underclassmen will be due Monday May 15th.

 

SENIORS:  Please check the fines list posted outside the bookroom and pay Ms. Brown in the bookroom by May 12th.

 

SENIOR PICNIC will begin at 5pm and conclude at 7pm tomorrow outside by the soccer field. Seniors may get their yearbooks at this time also.

SENIOR PICINC TIME CAPSULE We will have time capsule to be opened at our 10-year reunion at the Senior Picnic.  There will be paper and envelopes to write notes to your friends, but you can also bring anything you’d like to put in to see in 10 years.  Examples from past time capsules include: Pictures, Certificates, Medals, Volcano T-shirts, Newspaper articles, Copies of VVHS Newspapers, Any item that represents a memory In addition, if you think your club or organization would like to put something in the capsule, just bring it to the picnic and add it!

ORCHESTRA CONCERT: There will be an orchestra concert on Wednesday, May 3 at 7pm in the PAC

COUNSELING:

The FBI Albuquerque Division is accepting applications for its Teen Academy, which will run June 21-23, 2017. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2017. Candidates must be in the 11th or 12th grade for the 2017-18 school year. Anyone wanting more details should send a request to  aq.outreach@ic.fbi.gov.

ATHLETICS:

Hey Hawks, it's time to sign up for the Run for the Zoo!  Our high school has won the competition almost every year for having the most students, family, and friends signed up for the Run for the Zoo event in May.  You receive a HUGE discount by being a student, so if you want to sign up, see Coach Nord or Coach Suman by today to sign up for an easy one mile run, the 5K fitness walk or run, or the one that's the most popular--the 5K timed run!  Hope to see you out there reppin' our Volcano Vista community!!

 

GOLF: Congratulations to the Boys Golf Team for their 4th Place Finish in yesterdays Los Altos Golf Tournament.  Senior Ben Wells was the 1st Place Individual Winner for the boys and Junior Sabrina Galfano placed 2nd individually for the girls.

ATTENTION STAFF AND STUDENTS, counselors will be coming around this week during 4th period to recognize students that received a 3.5 GPA or higher for the 4th 6 weeks grading period.  Over 530 students are receiving this recognition, which is close to 25% of the school.  Congratulations to all students that are receiving this honor, keep up the great work.

TENNIS: The Hawks girl's varsity tennis team defeated Atrisco Heritage yesterday, winning 7-2 at Ventana Park. Winning for the Hawks in singles were Martina Rodriguez, Daeja Wyche, Connie Kennedy, Nicole Kratochvit, and Cristina Rodriguez. Winning in doubles were the teams of Reagan Robnett and Daeja Wyche and Lexxus Salazar and Nicole Kratochvit. The Hawks host Highland Thursday at Ventana Park.

If you are in need of credit recovery ECademy Spring Registration is open. The last day to register for ECademy is January 18th.  Spring ECademy classes have already started . The registration fee is $25 see your academy counselor to pay the registration fee and to enroll.

SOAR CARDS Attention students and staff, our fall semester drawing will be this Friday, January 6.  So make sure you get all your soar cards turned in.  Winners of the soar drawing will receive a fire tablet and the grand prize winner will win a Microsoft 2 in 1 tablet.  Winners will be notified and receive prizes at the winter assembly on January 20.  The next weekly drawing will be on Tuesday, January 17. 

 

LITERARY MAGAZINE: The Lit mag is taking submissions for the 2017 edition.  Submission forms are available from Mrs. Rizzardi or outside G201. Submissions will be accepted through January 13.

 

DANCE: the first annual Holly Hawkins dance will be on Saturday February 4. More info to come.

 

BOWLING The bowling team still could use a couple of more bowlers to fill out a team for the last 4 tournaments of the year.  Must be at Fridays practice so name can be added to grade check report.  There is a spot for you on the team regardless of skill level.

 

NATIONAL ENGLISH HONOR SOCIETY: There will be an intro meeting for NEHS on Friday during lunch in Mr. Finn's room. All students interested in joining are advised to come.

 

THE HIP HOP HAWKS will be meeting on Monday outside of Coach Suman's office after school.  New and interested club members are encouraged to come and see what we're all about!  

 

COUNSELING:

SENIORS: A representative from CNM will doing on site admissions Monday January 9 from at lunch. If you cannot make it during lunch please see Mr. Garcia in E224 to make an appointment if you want help with the  CNM application.

 

SENIORS: The FAFSA priority date for UNM is January 6th  . Make sure you have your completed UNM application and have filed your FAFSA by January 6th to qualify for as much financial aid as possible.

 

If you are in need of credit recovery ECademy Spring Registration is open. The last day to register for ECademy is January 18th.  Spring ECademy classes have already started . The registration fee is $25 see your academy counselor to pay the registration fee and to enroll.

 

ATHLETICS:

Staff Yoga today after school in the library at 3:50pm!

APS has raised the price of tickets to $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students

 

BOYS TENNIS preseason workouts begin today, the workouts are held after school every day at the VVHS tennis courts from 2:30- 4:00pm.   All skill levels are welcome.  For more information see Mr. Roybal in H131

 

GIRLS TENNIS All girls interested in playing tennis in the Spring can attend preseason hitting sessions to get ready for the upcoming season. These practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Sierra Vista Courts. New players are welcome. The dates are: January 5, Jan. 10, Jan. 12, Jan. 17, and Jan. 19.  Please see Coach Kappus or Coach Roybal for more information.

 

METRO BASKETBALL:

Congratulations to our boys basketball team for beating the Cleveland Storm 69-60. We move on to the final 4 of the Metro Tournament. The next game is Friday night at Del Norte against The Sandia Matadors.

 

The Girls will play Cibola at Rio Grande on Friday at 7:15

Join Taking Flights Productions for our spring musical, Urinetown. Prepare a 1-minute portion of a song from the musical, preferably as the character you're most interested in, and sign up for your audition spot with Ms. Gonzales is J122 when you return from winter break. Vocal auditions will take place in the PAC on Monday, Jan. 9 and dance auditions will be on Tuesday, Jan. 10. You must be available for after school rehearsals until show time, March 2 - 4. You've got time to prepare, so give it a try!

It’s always too quickly that we reach the end of each semester, and here we are again! This is the last week of 1st Semester. Here are a few details for the next several weeks that you may need:

 

FINAL EXAMS must be taken in every class and at the scheduled dates/times.

  • Dec. 12-15 è all after school events, rehearsals, practices, etc. must be complete by 6:00 p.m.

 

SCHEDULE:

  • TUESDAY, Dec. 13 is C-day: all 7 classes meet.
  • WEDNESDAY, Dec. 14 is A-day: final exams in classes 1, 3, 5, 7
  • THURSDAY, Dec. 15 is B-day: final exams in classes 1, 2, 4, 6
  • FRIDAY, Dec. 16 is C-day: administrator-approved make up final exams ONLY
    • This is a scheduled, full school day (7:25-2:25) on the calendar. Buses are running. There will be a basic sack lunch option available, but no snack bars or hot lunch.
    • ONLY for make-up Final Exams, which MUST BE APPROVED by the student’s Administrator:
      • skipping a test, sleeping late, etc. will not receive an approval for a make up---students MUST BE HERE FOR FINAL EXAMS on the scheduled dates and at the scheduled times!!
    • ALL students who show up on campus are required to stay for their entire schedule and attend all classes, NOT wander the halls or roam on and off of campus. If students need to do additional work for a class, they must work that out with their teacher ahead of time and then MUST be in class under their teachers’ supervision at all times.
    • NORMAL STUDENT CHECKOUT procedures apply for a student to leave campus early (parent sign out, or a verifiable parent note).

 

WINTER BREAK:

  • December 19 – January 2, NO SCHOOL
  • January 3, NO SCHOOL, Teacher Professional Development

 

NEXT SEMESTER:

  • WEDNESDAY, Jan. 4 is C-day: Students return to classes

NATIONAL ENGLISH HONOR SOCIETY: Students interested in joining NEHS need to make sure they have the required 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.5 cumulative GPA in English. Teacher's need to submit their recommendations to Mr. Finn in room F210 by Friday.

 

TSA: Who's Hungry?  TSA is sponsoring a night at Chipotle.  50% of the proceeds from everyone who shows the TSA Fundraising flyer will be donated to Volcano Vista's TSA Organizaiton.  We are a new student organization for those students interested in the technology related fields such as Computer Aided Drafting, Digital Film Production and Computer Graphics to name just a few.  If you are interested in learning more about TSA speak to Mrs. Allen in Room E115, or Mr. Gustafson in rooms G203 or G184.  We hope to see you at the Chipotle by CottonWood Mall TONIGHT.

 

CRAFT FAIR: Volcano Vista will have their 3rd Annual Craft Fair on Saturday, December 10 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm in the A-Hall concourse area.

 

OPEN MIKE NIGHT: It's that time again.  Open Mic Night is back!  This Friday, December 9 we will have our next Open Mic Night from 6 - 9 in the Black Box.  Cost of admission is only $5!  Performers can sign up outside G201 until Thursday at 2:30.  Don't miss out on the best show in Albuquerque!

PB & J: Student senate is sponsoring the PB & J Wish project. If your club, team or class would like to adopt a child or family for the holidays and provide them with their wish list, stop by the Activities Office and pick up a name. All gifts need to be returned by Wednesday, December 7.

 

CLUB FAIR:  during lunch on Wednesday there will be a Club Fair in the hallway by E and F halls. Stop by to see what activities we offer on campus.

 

SOAR CARDS: The next soar card drawing will be Tuesday, November 29.  Staff, if a student you gave a card is drawn, you will win a breakfast burrito from Blake’s.  So get those soar cards out.

GB: Girls’ Basketball – Won their season opener to Atrisco Heritage 59-37. They will play Los Alamos in the Ring of Fire tomorrow evening at 7pm.

WR: we have our first dual meet Wednesday against Los Lunas at 530pm in the Ring of Fire. We hope we can have all parents and supporters in attendance. We will be beginning wrestling at 530 starting with our JV squad, followed by the presentation of our senior athletes. ART SHOW: Student artwork will be on display in the Black during lunch this week. Artwork includes Drawing, Painting, Photography, Ceramics, and Computer Graphics.

 

BOWLING:The first bowling tournament of the season saw the intermediate team pick up the victory in that division.  Congrats to team members Noah Alderete, Alex Gomez, Jared Jandreau, Samantha Lingerfelt and Jarrod Potter.

There are still a lot of tournaments and time to join the team. Coach Hampel has about 10 spots still open and invites you to take one of the spots - and especially welcomes freshmen to come on out.

 SSDP: Students for Sensible Drug Policy will be having their first meeting on Wednesday, November 9th, in Mr. Greaves classroom E-211. Come by if you have any questions or are interested.

 

THE NATIVE CLUB will meet every Wednesday in my room (E-209) at lunch. All interested students are invited to attend.

 

DECA: Did you know people 65 and older are the fastest growing segment in our state? DECA has teamed with Genesis Nursing Home in attempt to provide items to seniors in need. Please help us brighten these seniors' holiday season by donating! If you donate you will be entered into a drawing to win a flat screen TV! In order to be entered simply donate 2 items. The more items you donate, the better chance you have of winning the flat screen TV! All items must be NEW! Items the seniors are in need of are posted throughout the school and in the library. All donations will be accepted in the library. Staff and students are welcome to participate!

ATHLETICS

Last Week’s Athletic Results

XC – Had an amazing run at the State Meet with the girls grabbing the 2nd place trophy in state!!!! The boys took 5th place in state! Congratulations on an amazing season!!

 

Volleyball – Girls’ beat Cleveland (3-1) to become District champs but lost the district tournament to PV (2-3). They received a 5th seed and pool play begins on Thursday @ 1:00 at Santa Ana Star Center.

 

Boys’ Soccer – Boys’ beat Hobbs in PKs (3-2) but lost to Albuquerque (1-2) in the semis. Congratulations on an outstanding season!

 

Football – Football lost to Cleveland (34-52). They received a 7th seed in state and will play Mayfield on Friday at 7:00pm at Community.

 

VB: will play at Santa Ana Star Center at 1pm on Thursday afternoon in the state tournament.

TEACHERS: Last week the Federal Impact Aid survey was delivered to you.  Please make sure that those that have been handed out have are returned by today at 2:30PM.

 

NATIVE AMERICAN CLUB: There will be an organizational meeting today during lunch in Mrs. Sloan’s room, E209. All interested students are welcome to attend.

 

CLUB PRESIDENTS: There will be a meeting at lunch for all club presidents in the lecture hall.

 

WING SQUAD: There will be a Wing Squad Meeting today at lunch in Ms. Corbitt’s room H208, come hear about all the volunteer opportunities coming up this month. 

 

TWELFTH NIGHT: Our drama department will be presenting the production of Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night on Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 1pm and Saturday evening at 7pm. All productions will be in the PAC. Tickets for adults are $5.00 and students with ID are $3.00.

 

ART SHOW:  The VVHS Fall Art Show is this weekend. Student artwork will be on display in the Black Box from 6 - 8 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and during lunch next week. Artwork includes Drawing, Painting, Photography, Ceramics, and Computer Graphics.

 

BAND: The Hawk Band will be competing in Las Cruces this weekend at the Tournament of Bands. Good luck to our marching band.

 

ATHLETICS

VB:  congratulations to our volleyball team for capturing the district title for the second consecutive year.

 

THURSDAY

BSOC – Boys’ will play Hobbs in the Quarterfinals at 3:30 at the Bernalillo Soccer Complex. Games are $5.00 and there is a fee for parking.

 

FRIDAY

UNIFIED HAWKS: Our Unified Hawks Flag Football team will play Friday 5-6:45 PM at Community Stadium.

Please come out and support our Unified Hawks. There is no charge for the games. FB: will play their final game of the regular season against Cleveland at community stadium at 7pm. It is Military Appreciation Night.

Today IS Wednesday October 12, 2016

 

Drivers Ed has been cancelled for today.

 

Attention staff and students, administrators will be coming around this week during 4th period to recognize students that received a 3.5 GPA or higher for the 1st  6week grading period.  Over 650 students are receiving this recognition, which 30% of the school.  Congratulations to all those that have worked so hard in the classroom.  We encourage you to keep up the good work.

A special thanks goes out to Senate for organizing a great carnival and Powderpuff game last night. If your name was announced, please see Mr. Colburn during lunch in the DECA Snack Bar to claim your prize.

 

Open Mic Night is back!  

Our first Open Mic Night of the school year will be next Wednesday, October 5 from 6 - 9 in the Black Box Theater.  

Sign up will be from Wednesday, September 28 until 2:30 pm Tuesday, October 4 outside of G201, Mrs. Rizzardi's room.  

Sign up early, we expect a great turnout!

 

FNHS: There will be a French Honor Society meeting today at lunch in E113. All members should plan to attend.

 

BOWLING coach will be in room F-105 today at lunch. Coach Hampel will answer questions about the VVHS team and accept new team members.  No experience is necessary.  This is a special invitation to freshmen to get involved.

 

COUNSELING

Seniors- College Days will be held this Thursday in the Library. If you do not have a 6th period class you are still able to attend! Rules

Volcano Vista High School dances are for Volcano Vista students and their dates only. The dances are for those students in good standing. Any student who is suspended at the time of the dance or who withdrew from VVHS not in good standing may not attend. There are a few rules which all students and their guests will follow while in attendance. 
1. All Volcano Vista students must show ticket and SCHOOL ID in order to be admitted to the dance. 
2. All non-Volcano Vista dates must bring a PHOTO ID to the dance. This ID will be left with the ticket taker at the door upon entering the dance and will be released at the time of departure. 
3. We do not refund tickets. 
Tickets are nontransferable 
No ID, No entrance!!! No exception!!! 
4. The following age restrictions apply: 
A. No one over the age of twenty (20) may attend a Volcano Vista sponsored dance. 
B. Guests must be at least in the ninth (9th) grade. 
C. Each student may bring one (1) guest. 
4. All Volcano Vista students and their guests must abide by all Volcano Vista and APS rules. 
5. No backpacks are allowed into the dance; purses & belongings may be searched. 
6. Please do not bring glow sticks, glow bracelets, glow necklaces, etc. (They ruin the gym floor) 
7. Homecoming tickets will be sold only to Volcano Vista students. 
DRESS CODE: 
Homecoming is a semi-formal event. Therefore, students must wear dressy clothing. Denim pants, hats and athletic wear (including tennis shoes) are not acceptable. Boys should wear a collared dress shirt (tucked in) with tie and dress slacks and may wear vests or blazers. Girls should wear a dress or pant suit. Clothing must fit properly and be in good taste. Those improperly attired will not be admitted to the dance and will not receive a refund for tickets purchased. 
DANCE BEHAVIOR 
All dancing must be upright and appropriate. No twerking, grinding or other lewd or suggestive style of dance will be tolerated. Any infractions of this policy will result in a warning and then dismissal from the dance. There will be no refunds. 
ARRIVING AND LEAVING THE DANCE: 
Students are to arrive at least one hour before the close of the dance (10pm). Once admitted into the dance, students and guests are not allowed to “come and go.” You are not allowed to leave to go to your car for forgotten items. Remember to bring those items with you when you enter. Water and rest rooms are available inside the dance area. You will not be readmitted if you leave the dance. 
A Coat Check and water are available for a small fee. 
A PhotoBooth will be available for all students at no charge. 
Breathalyzer will be used as necessary.
