Hello Hawks,

As promised, we have been working hard to review our current security structures. After much observation and discussion please be aware of the following that will be fully implemented on March 5. Please review with your children at home as we review with everyone via announcements and in classrooms. Please note that we are not asking for opinions, permissions or approvals, we are simply notifying you all of what’s coming to make sure you are well informed and prepared. We appreciate your support as we re-establish comfort with, and confidence in, our school safety protocols “By Any Means Necessary” (Malcolm X, 1964)

Entering the Building/Checking-in:

~All car riders will enter through the main entrance up the ramp

~All bus riders and student drivers will enter through the lower A entrance by the bus lot (all other entrances will be locked)

~After 7:25 all students will enter through the main entrance only (Students who drive will need to park and walk around to the main entrance)

***Tardy students will need to enter through the main entrance and check in at the main office before moving to any other place in the building (we need to have record that you are in the building as soon as you enter)

~All visitors will enter through the main entrance at all times, present ID to the receptionist and sign in

***If you are waiting for your child to come up to the office, please do so in the office area. Please do not wait in the main hallway (all other check-in/out procedures are the same including the updated food drop off policy)

***Please do not text your child to meet you in the parking lots or by the main entrance while you wait between the glass doors without checking-in

NOTE:

Students and staff must not, under any circumstances, prop or push open doors for anyone for any reason. All doors have sensors, and the office can receive notifications from APS Police when undesignated doors are disengaged. We will identify those who fail to comply using security cameras and impose all relevant consequences as warranted by the policy infraction.

CEC Classes:

Students taking classes at CEC will load and unload the bus in front of the school and enter/exit the building using the main entrance only. Please be sure to have your ID VVHS and CEC IDs with you at all times.

Early Arrivals:

~Students who arrive early to campus (if you have a first period) will wait inside the building for the 7:15 bell

~Students who do not have a first period (or other openings in their schedule) who choose to report to school early, you will need to check in at the front office and report immediately to the library where you will sign-in and wait until the start of your class (no more sitting around the school in open areas waiting for the bells)

Classrooms:

~All classroom doors will be locked with interior windows covered during instructional time

~All staff are asked to increase visibility outside of all classrooms and throughout the hallways during passing periods and lunch as available

~When instruction will take place outside of the classroom, a safety plan will be presented to the expanded security team for approval and location notification no less than 3 days before the planned activity. Plans will be shared with all admin and clerical. Radios will be checked-out to maintain uninterrupted communication in case of emergency. We must know the location of all classes at all times

~PE teachers, who regularly facilitate classes outside, will be outfitted with radios to maintain uninterrupted communication.

Hallways/Student Movement:

~Students will not be allowed in the halls without a detailed hall pass (student name, from/to locations, date time of departure and time sent back to class). We will use school issued, color-specific passes.

~No student groups or individuals will be allowed in halls to work unsupervised

~No early dismissals from class and absolutely no waiting in the halls for class change. Students are to remain in classrooms, supervised, during instructional times

Student, Staff and Visitor Identification:

~Must have school-issued ID in your possession (staff visible around your necks) at all times

~Students must be prepared to show ID if and when asked

~All visitors must present a valid ID when checking-in

~If you are here for a student, and your name is not listed on the student’s pick-up and/or emergency contact lists, you will not be allowed to engage with the student or leave items for the student (no changes will be made over the phone or by the student. Parent/guardian must do so in person)

Lunch Time:

~No students will be allowed outside during lunch (front or back)

~Students entering school during lunch must do so through the main entrance and be prepared to show your student ID

Front Entrance Modifications:

~We will be modifying the main entrance of the building to divert all students, staff and visitors directly to the front office rather than through the glass doors and into the main hallway during the instructional day

***Construction start date TBD

Security Surveillance/Security Personnel:

~ VVHS will be outfitted with fully upgraded, digital, 360 degree security cameras both inside and outside of the building. We will alleviate blind spots and greatly improve the quality of all captured images and video footage to include all aspects of the campus

~We have been allotted an additional Campus Security Aide

~We have on staff, housed on campus fulltime, an APS PD Detective who is armed, well trained and highly visible on and around campus

~We have additional APD presence assigned to the residential areas surrounding the school who respond to both community and school calls

~We are partnering with our parent advisory and our local Army recruiting office to provide additional, voluntary campus security support during and after the instructional day

***Requests for parent volunteers will be given out during student-led conferences. Please contact Mr. Alzaga if interested ext. 37301 or manuel.alzaga@aps.edu)

~Custodial and administrative teams will facilitate exterior door checks throughout the school day everyday

Drills:

~We will increase the frequency of safety drills and facilitate during varied times throughout the day and year without notifying anyone (staff, students etc…) with the exception of key personnel

Good Morning Students, Families and Staff,

This morning we investigated a social media threat to school safety, addressed to a school with the initials THMS, and quickly learned that it was made by someone in West Virginia (who is in custody as confirmed with police officials in West VA by our local APS PD Detectives). Although the school has the same initials as one of our local school, the original social media post (that I have seen and shared with district and school officials) we have confirmed that the threat was  not addressed to our schools.

Although the post was not intended for APS schools, we want to thank those who made us aware of this potential threat. As we’ve said before, we take student and staff safety seriously, will investigate all threats regardless of intent and continue to work with APS Police and the Albuquerque Police Department to assure that our campus is safe for all.

We understand that tensions are running high and we are doing all we can to alleviate fears and concerns. If you hear of any incident that could pose a threat to school safety, we ask that you continue to notify a school official immediately. Your reporting helped us identify the source very quickly this morning and allowed us to put additional security protocols in place.

Moving forward, we have put additional security measures in place at VV to limit movement around the building, are positioning security personnel and admin throughout the halls to closely monitor entrances to make sure all doors are locked and we are making sure that everyone who enters the building is quickly identified or removed as appropriate. We are also in communication with district supports to request reasonable building modifications to address building accessibility. We will also be receiving updated security cameras throughout the building (already ordered) to alleviate any potential blind spots and to allow us to identify and address any potential threats to our safety. We will also increase frequency of safety drills to make sure we stay ready. We will be briefing all teachers of new security protocols to make sure that all windows are recovered and all doors locked during instructional time.

I will keep you informed as additional information is shared, if any. Thank you for your continued support and diligence.

Jan. 29, 2018

Dear Staff, Students and Families of VVHS,

I am writing to share information with you about the affray that took place on Thursday (1/25) after the VVHS vs. Cibola boys’ basketball game and Winter Ball information.

The Affray:

To begin, please know that we have finalized our investigation and identified students from both VV and Cibola (we communicated relevant findings with Cibola leadership) who were actively engaged in the fight. All students who participated in this fight will face serious consequences imposed to the fullest extent allowable by district policy and law.

We received reports late last week and this morning from both students and parents that there were rumors about a possible fight taking place after the game at one of the neighboring parks that began to surface approximately two weeks before game night. Unfortunately, this was not initially reported to security personnel until about 2:20pm Thursday afternoon (the day of the game).

Once this information was received a modified security plan was put in place to address the potential affray at the park including requesting and receiving support from APD to monitor the parks and areas around the school.

A total of 13 adults were patrolling on and around campus during and after the game. Four police vehicles/officers were positioned in parking lots (bus and student lots) with lights flashing while officers patrolled to increase presence while students exited the area. CSAs were posted near the lobby doors leading to the bus lot directing kids to leave campus. Administrators were positioned inside in the gym and inside lobby to monitor, and APD was patrolling the areas around the school. However, because we were all spread-out covering as much area as possible, when the fight ensued in the student parking lot it was bigger than those positioned in that area could immediately handle alone hence calling for additional support that did arrive to help.

While we did have a security plan in place after hearing about a possible fight at the park, we all agree that additional steps can and will be taken moving forward. We will request, in advance, more security and administrative staff to increase adult presence in all areas to avoid being spread thinly around the campus. We will release students separately from the gyms to minimize opportunities for negative contact. We will not allow chants, signs and/or banter across the gym during the game from either school and will immediately remove anyone who is not in compliance contacting parents of the removal. We will also request that security officers escort student groups to parking lots, in addition to patrolling areas, to deter verbal and physical altercations and to have more support in place if such does take place.

In addition to steps being taken at school, we are asking if anyone receives any information about the possibility of a fight, rumored or substantiated, to please report to an administrator and/or security officer as soon as you hear it so we can take all possible steps to avoid future affrays. We also want to ask parents to please continue to talk to your children about appropriate, positive behaviors at school activities, and we will continue to do the same on campus. Your support as member of the village is so greatly appreciated. Thank you.

We will be meeting with Cibola leadership tomorrow afternoon to make decisions about, and collaborative security plans for, upcoming games. We have also engaged our student leaders at VV about meeting with Cibola student leaders (in collaboration with school leadership) to get their feedback on how we can encourage all students to make better choices moving forward pertaining to the rivalry.  VV students have also proposed a unity event to continue to encourage positive behaviors to help deter any similar instances from occurring in the future. We are looking forward to working with Cibola in support of all students.

Winter Ball Cancellation (precautionary measure)

Because of the events that took place last Thursday after the game, the continued, negative banter on social media among students, and our desire to be cautious leading with a safety-first approach, we have decided to cancel our Winter Ball. We are not attempting to use this as a punishment because we realize that most students are blameless in this, but we must make decisions in the best interest of keeping all students and staff as safe as we can. This was shared with all students and staff during lunch and again before the dismissal bell.

Thank you all for your continued support of VVHS and for your patience as we conducted a very extensive investigation over the last several days to help us make more informed decisions moving forward. I continue to be honored to be a part of our school community as we partner to do what’s best for kids.

Sincerely,

Dr. B

DECA Means Business In Our Community…

Did you know each year the Volcano Vista DECA Chapter gets recognized for its school and community outreach at the international level? Our students are proud members of our school and community. Over the course of the last several months VVHS DECA assisted with the Raymond G. Sanchez Community Center Fall Carnival, helped host the Sierra Vista Veterans’ Day Color Run, went out to support our Volcano Vista Lady Hawk Volleyball team as a chapter, carved pumpkins for our school, etc. When talking to an active DECA student you will clearly see VVHS DECA prides themselves on supporting our school and community. Below is a list of some of the most recent activities DECA has been involved with:

On 11/11 DECA students hosted a Color Run on campus to benefit VVHS Athletics and Band and donated almost $400 back to our school.

From 11/16-11/19 twenty-nine Volcano Vista DECA students attended the Western Region Leadership Conference (WRLC) in Phoenix, AZ. While in Phoenix, students had the opportunity to tour local businesses, meet business entrepreneurs first-hand, attend business conferences, tour schools such as Arizona State University and Galvanize and have an overall good time.

During the Month of November DECA hosted a canned food drive competition to benefit Roadrunner Food Bank. The Unified Hawks won the campaign and were awarded $100.00. In addition to the hundreds of cans donated by the Volcano Vista community, $371.00 in cash donations were also collected!!

On 11/29 DECA Officers spent their afternoon shopping for groceries to be used for the Habitat for Humanity’s Lunchbox Builders Program.

On Saturday 12/02 VVHS DECA will be making and delivering lunches to volunteers building homes for families in need.

It’s hard to believe the above is not an exhaustive list of all of the projects DECA is presently involved in. DECA students are in partnership with numerous businesses and nonprofit organizations as they work on their written projects.

On January 9th DECA will be traveling to the University of New Mexico to compete in our District Competition – Please wish us luck!! If you would like to get involved, we are in need of chaperones! Please email Brian Colburn at COLBURN@aps.edu to join our students as they make a difference in their own lives and our community.

Due to overcrowded classrooms, it was necessary for leveling of classes to occur.  A handful of students had their schedules changed to accommodate the new classes created.  We were required to make schedule changes to balance the number of students in classes. Every effort was made to maintain the integrity of students' schedules by making minimal adjustments while remaining in compliance with relevant regulations.

As in past years, timing and efficiency is always important when the school makes these changes.  Therefore, school adminstration felt that making the changes at the 6 week grading period would create the best transition.

Please check StudentVue for the most up to date information regarding your students classes.  Select the Gradebook Tab to see the new schedule of classes.  Or you can ask your student to view their schedule.  During 7th period today, the school gave all students a copy of their schedule, even though only a small group are impacted with a schedule change.  If they did not receive their hardcopy schedule and need it, please have them see their 7th period teacher or visit their academy office.
