APS bans travel because of coronavirus concerns

By Raquel Estrada

As of March 10, 2020, Albuquerque Public Schools released a statement saying it has “suspended all district sponsored staff and student out-of-state travel as a precaution.” This is due to increasing risk of public safety because of COVID-19, otherwise known as the coronavirus.

Many of Volcano Vista’s own extracurriculars were planning important travels for the next month, including Deca nationals in Tennessee, and Choir’s trip to New York. All of these trips as of yesterday are suspended, which has disappointed many students.

New Mexico still has been reported to be “corona free,” and APS is taking as many precautions as possible to protect Albuquerque’s students. School administrators are meeting to determine if and when schools may close.

Journalism and Newspaper are classes that prepare students for a career area and provide an opportunity for students to become more involved with the culture of Volcano Vista HS. Our main goal is to produce a quality, monthly newspaper. Students are invited to write for the school newspaper once they have displayed proficiency in the current Journalism materials.

Journalism/Newspaper is a project-based course in which students learn: Marketable publication skills, development of individual writing styles, illustration, print layout, desktop publishing, documentary photography, and graphic design.  Upperclassmen assume the roles of editorial leaders and take responsibility for producing a newspaper.

Professionalism and responsibility are cornerstones of the course by emphasizing deadlines, teamwork, organization, and business skills. The ethics and skills of journalism will be stressed during lessons and throughout all phases of production.
